Albert Maurice "Al" Amundson, Jr., 86, longtime resident of Superior, died peacefully at home Friday, February 8, 2013, surrounded by family.
He was born April 13, 1926 in Cass Lake, MN to Albert O. and Esther C. (Hanson) Amundson. After moving to Superior with his family, he graduated from Central High in 1944, and immediately enlisted in the Navy, serving during WWII as a Signalman aboard the USS Block Island in the Pacific theater. After the war, Al returned to Superior, and married Seija Tasaranta, December 3, 1953 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he's been an active parishioner ever since. Al cherished his wife, family, church and friends.
He started his career as a telegrapher on Northern Pacific Railway and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1987, operating the swinging railway bridge over the St. Louis River for the majority of his time with them. Al also worked on the side as a handyman, doing carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical and masonry work. He was a member of his railroad union local, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 137, and Acacia-Itasca Lodge 329.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul Maurice Amundson; sisters, Leona Thompson and Hazel Pederson, all of Superior.
Survivors include his wife, Seija ; daughters, Darlene (Gary) Van Kauwenbergh, Fitchburg, WI, and Dianne (Mark) Tomczak , Foxboro, WI; eight grandchildren, Jack (Jenni), Brad (Anna), Amy, Greg (Rebecca), Jenni (Chad), Ryan, Rachel and Josh; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave, Superior, followed by services at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Sarah Kerkes officiating.
Military rites will be accorded at the church by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435.
Inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, will be held at a later date.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
