Anne T.
(Stromko) Snyder
May 12, 1918 – July 24, 2018
Anne T. (Stromko) Snyder, 100, of Superior, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Essentia Health- St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born May 12, 1918, at home in the east end of Superior, WI, where she had lived her entire life. Her parents were Joseph and Alexandra Stromko and her brothers were Ben and Joseph Stromko. She attended St. Adalbert's Parochial School and graduated from East End High School. On April 12, 1939 she married Paul J. Snyder and celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing in 1998. They had one daughter, Barbara J. LaVine; two granddaughters, Cathy (Dan) Orlandi and Susan (Mark) Radzak; three great-grandchildren, Sara, Alexandra, and Adam; and two great-great-grandchildren, Josiah and Miguel.
Anne worked as a custodian for both St. Adalbert's School and Church. In 1965, the Activities Program was established at the former St. Francis Nursing Home, where she became the Activities Director. She was very proud of "providing the residents to participate in crafts, putting meaning into their lives. She felt it gave them a sense of pride and satisfaction. They were happier and looked forward to another day."
She has also been a wonderful homemaker to her family. In addition to her crafts, she kept a beautiful bed of flowers and an abundant vegetable garden. Family members will argue when it comes to a favorite meal. Whether it is the old gold cookie tin filled with chocolate chip cookies, the homemade apple squares, or her fabulous brown gravy; they all win the blue ribbon. She was always ready to play a game of cribbage (watch out, she was very sharp) and never missed watching the Green Bay Packer game. As a centenarian she remembers "no electricity, no indoor plumbing, no televisions/radios and using coal to heat and cook." She talked about all the small shops on Tower Avenue in downtown Superior, especially Woolworth's and Newberry's dime stores.
When asked her secret to making it to 100, "live one day at a time- physically, mentally, spiritually and eat more sauerkraut!!"
