Obituary

Our fun- loving aunt, Antoinette "Erma" (Moretto) Harty, age 98, passed away July 10, 2025 at Essentia/St Mary's Hospital in Superior, Wisconsin. A lifelong Wisconsin resident, she was born on August 23, 1926, to the late Joseph and Virginia (Barat) Moretto, who immigrated to Wisconsin from Zorzoi, Italy.

Growing up on the small dairy farm which her father built in Dewey Township south of Superior, Erma was familiar with hard work and physical challenges. During the school year, she and her siblings walked two miles back and forth to classes in the Dewey one-room schoolhouse and then returned home to complete farm chores.

On December 2, 1944, she married her sweetheart, Douglas "Laddie" Harty and in 1955, they built their dream home in Oakland Township which provided her with an opportunity to live close to nature. A lover of plants, she worked at Missinne's Greenhouse; tended her own extensive vegetable and flower gardens and preserved her harvest by canning and making delicious jellies. She was an excellent cook and loved to welcome people to her home with a tasty meal and homemade pies and sweets.

Erma loved to make things with her hands: embroidered items, Christmas wreaths, wearable art. In her later years, she completed many beautiful pictures from her adult coloring books.

Many people knew Erma because she was so outgoing and friendly. She made many friends through her church involvement and her job at Woolworth's in Superior. She served her community as an Election Judge and she volunteered at Middle River Health Facility. She was active in sports: softball, golf, and the Lyman Lake Snowshoe Races.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Laddie, brothers, Batista and Phillip Moretto, sisters, Suntina Spehar and Alice Olson, and two infant brothers. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Judy Moretto and many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Thank you to the many professionals who cared for and comforted our Aunt Erma during the last years of her life: New Perspectives in Superior; Willow Manor in Iron River, Wisconsin; Essentia/St Mary's Hospital; and Essentia Health Hospice.  A special thank you to her "angels on earth" Carol and Tony Ernst who visited her often and brought so much joy to her life.
