Obituary

Arlene Olson, 92, of rural Superior passed away peacefully on November 16, 2021, surrounded by family at her side at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

Arlene and her twin sister, Irene, were born on January 15, 1929, to Samuel and Hilja (Byorni) Vendela. Arlene attended Billings School in South Superior. After the death of her mother, she left school to help care for the family. In 1949, she married the love of her life, Sidney Olson. She helped take on the duties of rural living with farming, raising animals, yard work, flowers, baking, canning, cooking and raising three children. As a couple they worked to create a better learning environment for children with mental challenges and partook in the development of the DCCR Center in Superior. Arlene was also a bus driver for the Center.

Arlene was a very kind, loving and beautiful person who enjoyed everyone. She was a dear friend and confidant. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who knew her as Mummu.

Some of her greatest enjoyment was children, baking, cooking, embroidery, floral arranging, singing, yodeling and making sure no one left the table hungry. The coffee pot was always on.

Mummu had a special way to gather family together to celebrate every birthday and special occasion, especially lefse making before the holiday.

Arlene is survived by daughter, Jean (Richard) Church of Ramsey, MN; son, James (Jane) Olson of Superior; grandchildren, Rebecca Olson, Christopher (Caroline) Church, Katie (Jeremy) Browen, Kodi (Timothy) Verhalen and Khalan (Jessica) Church; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Ciara, Annie and Josiah Church, Dylan and Logan Browen and Emily Verhalen; sister, Edna Abrahamzon of South Range; brother, Lester Vendela of Prescott, AZ; sisters-in-law, Ruth Rasmussen of Carlton, MN and Violet Fick of Lebanon, OR; and many nieces and nephews.

Waiting to greet her are her parents; husband, Sidney; special son, Raymond; her twin sister, Irene and her multiple other siblings.

Her family is honoring Arlene's request for no service. A private family burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Arlene's family extends their gratitude to all those who helped her and her family through her final days; Mayo EMTs, St. Luke's Hospital staff from 4West and 2West Hospice Care Unit.
