Arthur J. Amys, 83, died Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Superior Rehab and Nursing Center surrounded by his family.
Art was born in Superior on March 18, 1934, the son of Caesar and Cecelia (Archambeault) Amys. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1952 and married the love of his life, Betty Johnson, on July 18 1953. They celebrated 64 years of marriage.
He lived in both Superior and Poplar and owned several trucking companies and worked in the fisheries industry in Alaska. He traveled often including Japan, Norway, and Sweden for various fishery companies. Art also helped run a beef cattle operation and loved farming.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and was a fourth-degree Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight in 1969 and 1975. He was a longtime member of the Belgian Club. Art also helped coach Cathedral basketball and Pony League football and belonged to local golf and bowling leagues. He liked hunting, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. More recently, Art enjoyed working newspaper crossword puzzles and sitting in his backyard swing with his coffee and reading a good book.
Art was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was very generous and helpful to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Cecelia and Alex Ronchi; brothers, Ronald, Herbert, and Dale; and his granddaughter, Adrienne.
Art is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Rick (Nedra) Amys, Dave (Debbie) Amys, Scott (Vikki) Amys, Barbara (Rick) Finckler, Art (Susan) Amys, Jeanne Thompson and Tony (Eileen) Amys; 23 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; his brother Jerry (Shelly) Amys; and aunt, Adele Archambeault.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 18 th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Andrew P. Ricci will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Art's grandsons, Adam, Bradley, Alex, Andrew, Luke, Erik, Logan and Cameron.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Art & Betty Amys Transportation Scholarship at UW-Superior or to Cathedral School.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the "Angel Staff" at Superior Rehab and Nursing Center for their kind and loving care of Art.
