Arthur Clarence Haugen Jr. of Superior, WI died Monday, January 6, 2020 after a lengthy illness at the age of 75.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Sr., and Virginia (Din) Haugen of Superior, WI.
Art received a degree in Geology from UWS in 1968 after attending Gogebic College in lronwood, MI. He was drafted into the Army in 1968, and remained in the active reserve until 2006, retiring with the rank of Captain, and serving in the Gulf War in 1991. He received a degree in Pharmacy from North Dakota State University in 1980 and worked for several decades in Superior at the East End Drug Store, Allouez Drug Store, Falk's Drug, and People's Drug Store, retiring in 2016. He also volunteered at the Chippewa Vallev Free Clinic in Eau Claire, WI for several years.
He loved to read, had many interests, and belonged to several organizations. He was a member of the Lakehead Harvest Reunion Steam Engine Club, the Mesabi Range Geological Society, The Society of Mining Engineers, the Cuyuna Rock and Mineral Club, the American Pharmacist's Association, the Arizona Geological Society, the Colorado Mining Association, the Mining Foundation of the Southwest, the American Legion, the Mining History Association, the East African Wildlife Society, the VFW, the Disabled American Veterans Association, the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, the Antique Fan Collectors Association, the Griswold Cast Iron Collectors, the Power Squadron, the American Rock Mechanics Association, the Society of Economic Geologists, the International Society of Explosive Engineers , and the Western Museum of Mining and Industry. His varied interests allowed him to meet many unique people that he loved talking with over the years. He built his own steam powered boat, mined gold in Georgia, and enjoyed traveling the world, bringing back rock and mineral specimens for his collection. He also held a Class I Blasters License for Wisconsin.
He loved animals and nature, and attended several programs to learn more about them, including the bear program at the Wildlife Research Center in Ely, MN with Dr. Lynn Rogers. He also enjoyed the family cabin, hiking, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, attending folk festivals, black powder shoots, and geology field trips around the U.S. Art traveled extensively, with Africa being among his favorite trips. He was a talented craftsman and could repair almost anything.
Art is survived by a brother, Walter (Sara) Haugen of Foxboro, WI; and by his partner and best friend of 41 years, Kathy Kindel of Superior, WI; nephew, Owen Haugen of Salt Lake City; as well as cousins, nephews, and nieces. His caring nature was evident to those who knew him, and he often put kindness before profit or self-interests.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 13 th from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 th Street, Superior. Graveside service will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or to the Lion Research Center through the University of MN, Mpls, to support Dr. Craig Packer in his ongoing research program per Art's wishes.
Art was a kind, generous, and gentle man who will be missed by the many who knew him.
