Arthur Joseph Scharte, 85, of Superior, Wis., died Tues., Oct. 27, 2009 in his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born July 8, 1924 in Superior to Audrey (Tracey) and Arthur Scharte. He was a 1942 graduate of Superior Central High School. He served three years in the U. S. Navy during WW II, part of that time aboard a navy destroyer in the South Pacific.
Arthur was employed as a firefighter and retired as a captain in 1980 after 28 years of service with the City of Superior Fire Dept. He had also owned and operated Scharte & Sons Floor Finishing.
His memberships included Holy Assumption Catholic Church, the Superior Elks Lodge #403, the Retired Firemen's Assoc., and the V. F. W.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Ruth Melin; four sons, Michael (Lynn) Scharte, Timothy (Kerry) Scharte, Christopher (Tina) Scharte, and Jeffrey (Erin) Scharte all of Superior; a daughter, Nancy (Scott) Misfeldt of Kohler, Wis., grandchildren, Lindsay, Patrick (Nicole), Brooke, John, Joel, Elizabeth, Neal, James, Molly, Eiley, Andrew, Thomas (Erin), Abraham (Caroline), and Sonia (Paul); four great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Natalie, Caleb, and Sarai; a sister, Catherine (Richard) DeMars; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Thomas Potter; a great-grandchild, Andrew Potter; a sister, Elaine Monday; and a brother, Floyd Scharte.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. & 19th St., on Fri., Oct. 30th. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Holy Assumption Church with Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson as Celebrant.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Thomas and Abraham Potter, Patrick, John, Joel, Neal, and Andrew Scharte, and James Misfeldt. The Superior Fire Department Honor Guard will be present. Military honors will be accorded by the Thomas F. Stein V. F. W. Post No. 1091 and the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post No. 435 Honor Guard.
Inurnment will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
The family would like to thank all the friends and relatives who came to visit Arthur during his illness. The family also wishes to thank St. Mary's Hospice Home Care for their care and kindness shown Arthur and his family during this time.
