Barbara "Barb"
A. Mckay
August 22, 1927 – November 17, 2018
Barbara 'Barb' McKay, 91, lifelong Superior resident, died peacefully on Saturday, November 17 at Ecumen Lakeshore in Duluth.
Barb was born August 22, 1927 in Superior to Walter and Ruth Madsen. Barb was educated in Superior, graduating from Superior Central in 1946. She began a 31year career at Northwestern Bell, mostly as a supervisor.
In 1976, Barb married the love of her life, James McKay. She enjoyed the most wonderful, joyous time of her life until his passing in 1989. After her husband's death, Barb became involved in several volunteer efforts- Friends of the Library, Essentia/St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, and a board member for Senior Connections among others.
Barb loved to play bridge, read, especially history books, and walk her dogs. It's because of this life-long love of dogs that the family request no flowers, but memorials to the Superior/Douglas County Humane Society.
Barb is survived by her stepson, James McKay, Jr. of McFarland, WI; sister, Patricia Backlund of Grand Marais, MN; nephew, Michael (Nancy) Backlund of Grand Marais, MN; nieces, Patzer (Ed) Lynch of Superior and Barbara Backlund of Grand Marais, MN; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Family and friends would like to thank the entire staff at Ecumen Lakeshore for the wonderful care they gave to Barb.
Barb was a classy lady with a great smile and a warm heart. She will be truly missed.
