Obituary

Barbara Joanne Carey, 92, of Superior, passed away with family by her side on Thursday, November 5, at her home.

Barb was born on January 2, 1934, to Walter and Cecelia Fitzgerald in Superior, Wisconsin. She graduated from East High School in 1951. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis Xavier Church where she remained active throughout her lifetime. Barb married Michael Carey on February 14, 1953, at St. Francis and celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together they made the East End of Superior home where they raised their five children. It was fitting that her last residence was at the St. Francis apartments in East End.

Barb graduated from Wisconsin Technical College in1970 with a Licensed Practical Nurse certificate. She worked as an LPN at the Children’s Screening Clinic of the Douglas County Health Department and at the Douglas County Blood Bank, where she retired in 1989. Barb was a life-long learner with plenty of common sense alongside her warmth. Her unassuming ways and resourcefulness pointed to gratitude for the everyday gifts. She was an avid reader, always in the middle of reading a book.

Barb was a member and past president of the St. Francis Altar Society and Douglas County Extension Homemaker Program. She was a member of the Pastoral Committee of St. Francis Nursing Home and the Pieceful Quilters. Her generosity and gentle spirit were rooted in daily prayer and friendships through her church home. She brought hope by seeing the best in others and in the wonder of creation. At the cabin, her fishing pole was never far away. She was famous in her extended family for perfecting the removal of the y-bone in the Northern Pike.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Michael; granddaughter Erin; sisters; Cecelia, Peggy, Pat and her brother Mike; brothers-in-law; Cletus, Jim, Bud and sister-in-law, Jackie.

Her legacy lives on with her children; Pamela (Brad) Lisdahl, Corvallis, OR; Linda (Tim) Young, two Harbors, MN; Steve(Barb) Carey, Superior, WI; Mary (Randy) Olson, Solon Springs, WI; Michelle (Bruce) Tunell, Hahira, GA; grandchildren; Michelle (Mike) Storrs, Mike (Emily)Lisdahl, Tina(Troy) Johnson, Amy (Levi) Kehn, Ryan (Sabrina) Young, Leanna(Cole) Leadholm, Matthew (Ashley) Olson, Eric (Joelle) Olson, Justin (Marisa) Tunell, Dylan (Erin) Pearson, Rebecca (Joe) Olinger, Benjamin Tunell, and she was lovingly known as “GG” to her great-grandchildren; Conner, Sam, Annika, Abrahm, Hunter, Addie, Mason, Brooke, Nora, Trevor, Hayden, Maddie, Aubree, Ava, Virginia, Ezra, Eden, Elias, and Henry; Many Nephews and Nieces.

Barb’s family extends heartfelt thanks to Essentia health hospice, and for the support of her dear quilting friends, as well as the caring ministry of St. Francis Xavier Church. Memorials can be given to St. Francis Xavier Church or St. Vincent de Paul.

Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2316 E 4th Street, Superior, WI, on November 13, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 am followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment at St. Francis Cemetery.
