Bernard J. Hnath, age 86 of Duluth, MN passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on November 25, 2018. Bernard was born in Ashland, WI on July 5, 1932, the son of John and Anna (Imrick) Hnath of rural Ashland. He attended Eileen and Ondossagon schools, graduating from high school in 1950. On June 29, 1963, "Bernie" was united in marriage to Judith A. Hoffman in Superior, WI.
He was employed by Ashland Industries Inc. for 45 years. While employed there, he designed earthmoving equipment which became the main product manufactured through the years. In 1966 he became part owner and general manager of Ashland Industries. He was also involved with the purchase and management of Hawk Industries, a loader manufacturer that was sold in 1990. In addition, he and his brothers, John Jr. and Donald had a trucking, grading and snowplowing business (Hnath Bros).
Bernie was forced into retirement in 1998 after a massive stroke. He remained hospitalized for months in a Duluth hospital and rehabilitation center. After his release, he and his wife continued to live in Duluth with their daughter Julie and family. Julie relinquished her teaching profession to care for her father along with help from her brother Jim.
While living in Ashland, Bernie was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, the Rotary Club, the Elk's and served on the board of directors for Ashland's Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed traveling, going to casinos, dining out and all the wonderful celebrations at the Hnath Century Farm with family and friends.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy, daughter Julie A. (Tom) Benson, Duluth, MN and son James B. (Sharyl) Hnath, Ashland, WI four grandchildren, Brett, Samantha, Sunnie, Sydney, three brothers, Donald, David, Paul, and two sisters Dorothy (Ivan) Bichanich and Kathleen Hnath.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna (Imrick) and brother John.
A private family service with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Cathedral of Christ the King Church Superior. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Superior, WI.
