Bernard J. "Bernie" O'Connell, Sr., 87, of Superior, died peacefully at home, January 9, 2011.
He was born in Montreal, Wis. on Mar. 30, 1923 the son of Mary (Hanley) and John O'Connell.
Bernie was a dedicated police officer for the city of Superior for 31 years and a World War II Veteran. He was a very devoted husband to his late wife Verna, of 45 years, with whom he enjoyed years of extensive travel. He was also a beloved father, uncle, and grandfather. His Catholic faith and Irish ancestry were very important parts of his life.
Bernie is survived by his children ; Dr. Bernard J. O'Connell Jr., Maureen P. (Milt) Johnston, Margaret M. "Peggy" O'Connell, Daniel H. O'Connell, William A. (Irma) O'Connell, and Gordon E. Jerome. He is also survived by his grandchildren William M. O'Connell, Danielle E. O'Connell, Nicholas A. O'Connell, and Justin P. O'Connell of Superior, along with Dillon J. O'Connell and Devin J. O'Connell of Atlanta, GA.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Cathedral of Christ the King Church with Rev. Fr. Andrew P. Ricci as celebrant. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion post #435.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for Bernie's grandchildrens' higher education funds or to The Cathedral Christ the King Church. Green is the appreciated color of attire, to honor Bernie's Irish heritage.
Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th Street and Ogden Avenue, is assisting the family with arrangements.
