Bernice L. (Hughes) Schaffer, 84, of Superior, died Monday, December 31, 2012 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born April 24, 1928 in Superior, daughter of Swan and Agnes (Joswiak) Swanson.
Bernice was a 1946 graduate of Superior Central High School.
Some of her many interests included playing cards, reading, watching professional wrestling, feeding birds and squirrels, and spending time outdoors. Her family remembers her love of family, God and country.
Bernice worked as a S.P.D. crossing guard at Baxter and Belknap, in front of Cathedral of Christ the King church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and brother, Johnny Swanson.
Survivors include her daughters, Loretta "Laurie" (Howard) Peterson, Duluth, and Laura "Penny" (Tony) Aydt, Superior; 4 grandchildren, Chris, Jesse, Tony and Tashina; 5 great-grandchildren, Olivia, Nolan, Alex, Kiana and Carson; step-sons, Donald Schaffer and Pinky Schaffer; and nephew, William "Skip" Scott, Apple Valley, MN.
The visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior.
