Betty Jane Sutherland, 86, of Superior, took off her apron for the last time on Saturday, May 22, 2010. She was at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.
She was born in Superior to Donna (Hughes) and John Greene on January 17, 1924.
Betty was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1941. She worked at the Palace Theatre and Stroozas grocery store, before becoming a bank teller at the Wisconsin State Bank in South Superior which later became M&I Bank. She retired from M&I Bank in 1989.
She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Catholic Daughters, Central High School Reunion Committees; enjoyed baking brownies, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J. Eugene "Pudge" Sutherland and her sister, Mary Catherine Evered.
Betty is survived by her children; Scott Sutherland of Superior, Marcia (John) Duffy of Maple Grove, MN, Roberta (Tom) Johnson of Hazelhurst, WI, Mary Elizabeth (Bruce) Haraldson of Superior, Laurie Sutherland of Rochester, MN, Bruce Sutherland and Mark Sutherland both of Brooklyn Park, MN; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a special niece, Ethel Irene (Bob) Lahti of Duluth, MN, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 27th with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Superior 1190, at Downs Funeral Home on the corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. Visitation will resume on Friday, May 28th at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of Christ the King with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Cathedral School Library or the Solvay Hospice House.
