Obituary

Byron D. Johnson, 91, of Superior, died Friday, February 1, 2019, at New Perspective Senior Living, Superior.

He was born February 19, 1927, in Superior.

Byron proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He served on a merchant marine fuel tanker, and following the war was on a tugboat in Tokyo Bay, raising sunken Japanese ships.

Some of his interests included fishing, camping, swimming, traveling, and playing cards.

Byron retired as a diesel and pump mechanic for Lakehead Pipeline, Superior. Prior to his pipeline work, he worked for the Great Northern Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth in 2018; son, Jeff; and an infant granddaughter.

Survivors include his children, Dennis (Mary) Johnson, Prior Lake, Minnesota, Buzz Johnson, Moose Lake, Minnesota, Jackie (John) Venner, Lincoln, Nebraska, Diane Johnson, West Sacramento, California, and Karen (Steve) Rickstrom, Superior; daughter-in-law, Kathy Johnson, Maple Grove, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at noon until the 1 p.m. service, Friday, February 8, 2019, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19 th Street, Superior. Reverend Michelle Rowell, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Following the memorial service, military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435, at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Superior, at a later date.
