Catherine A.
Mitton
December 7, 1929 – June 21, 2020
Catherine Alice Mitton, 90, a 49-year resident of Superior, Wis., went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 21, 2020 in Littleton, Colorado.
Cay was born on December 7, 1929 in Buffalo, New York to Erma and Claude Hicks, and grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. She graduated with a Bachelors' degree in home economics from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1951. While in college, she had a summer job in Ottawa, where she met Moncton-native Donald Mitton in church. After graduation, she taught home economics at Saint John Vocational School in Saint John, New Brunswick. She married Don in September 1952 in Moncton, and they moved to Louisville, Ky. where Don attended seminary and Cay worked in a hospital and the seminary's restaurant. Son John was born in Louisville, and in 1956, they returned to Canada, where Paul, Mark and Carolyn were born. In 1964, the family moved to Superior for Don's work as a history professor at UW-Superior. Cay enjoyed working in the dietary department at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth for 18 years, and formed lifelong friendships with several of her colleagues.
Cay loved her family and friends, and always remembered everyone's birthday. She was a terrific cook and a skilled baker. Anyone who visited her beautifully-decorated home on Weeks Avenue could count on some freshly-baked treats. At holidays throughout the year, she would deliver cookies to her local friends, and send creative care packages to her children and grandchildren around the country. Her garden was a thing of beauty and frequently made the front page of the newspaper when her spring flowers were in bloom in her favorite shades of pink and purple.
An active member of Bayside Baptist Church, Cay sang in the choir, served on the flower committee, and was chairperson of the senior adults group. After the loss of Don in 2003, she formed a successful support group for widowed church members, offering solace and practical help.
Throughout her life, Cay excelled at the Mitton family's favorite game of Crokinole, pretending to not know what she was doing and then trouncing her opponents with a casual flick of her finger.
In 2013, Cay moved to an apartment in the EagleCrest retirement community in Roseville, Minn. She enjoyed spending time with her family in the Twin Cities, discovered the joys of shopping at Byerlys, and was known to her fellow residents as an elegant old-world lady.
Cay is survived by sons John (Liz) Mitton of Houston, Texas; Paul (Janelle) Mitton of Littleton, Colo. and Mark (Susanna) Mitton of New York City; daughter Carolyn (Jerry) Fraisier of Blaine, Minn.; grandchildren Maggie, Logan, Rebecca, James, David, Jacob and Nathan; great-grandchildren Carson, Ellie, Leayden, Emma, Lucas and Elijah; brother-in-law Harold Mitton of Wolfville, Nova Scotia; cousin Claude Hicks, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; nephew Ronald Mitton of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and niece Ruth Clish of Hubley, Nova Scotia.
Cay's service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2020, at Bayside Baptist Church, 3915 N 16th St, Superior, WI.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cay's name to Bayside Baptist Church.
