Obituary

Charles "Charlie" A. Wright, 78, of Superior, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2025, at Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, surrounded by the love of his family and dear friends. Though his life journey has ended, his spirit—fueled by boundless curiosity, laughter, and kindness—lives on in all who knew him.

Born in Park Rapids, MN, on April 23, 1946, to Archie and Margaret (Comstock) Wright, Charlie was a man who never stopped marveling at the world around him. He carried a deep appreciation for nature, a fascination with learning, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of people. After graduating from Park Rapids High School, he pursued his passion for education, earning a Bachelor's degree from Bemidji State University, followed by his Master's and Specialist degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Superior.

In 1969, Charlie married the love of his life, Joanne Carlson. Together, they built a beautiful life, full of adventure, laughter, and an unshakable partnership that lasted 55 years.

Charlie's heart belonged to education. As a beloved Biology teacher and coach at Superior Senior High School, and later as Assistant Principal at Central Junior High and Principal at Superior High School, he left an indelible mark on generations of students. He had a rare gift for making learning exciting, turning everyday moments into lessons on the beauty of nature.

Outside the classroom, Charlie found joy in the great outdoors—camping under star-filled skies, casting lines in the quiet waters of the BWCA, and watching the seasons change through the lens of his binoculars. An avid bird watcher, golfer, and traveler, he embraced every experience with wonder and gratitude. But nothing compared to the joy of being with his granddaughters—his biggest fans, and he, theirs. He rarely missed a game, always cheering the loudest, always beaming with pride.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved granddaughter, Katelyn Peterson; sister, Hazel Dennis; and brother, Dick Condiff. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joanne; son, Scott Wright of Esko; daughter, Jodie Wright (David See) of Superior; and granddaughters, Jayla Jones, Mackenzie Peterson, and Callie Peterson.

Charlie's life will be celebrated with love and laughter—just as he would want—on Saturday, April 5th, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N 34th St.

In honor of Charlie, take a moment to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds and appreciate the beauty around you. That's what he would have done.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Superior High School Scholarship Foundation, 3025 Tower Ave. Charlie's family will be establishing a scholarship in his name.
