Obituary

Clara G. Komatz, 89, of Superior, passed away Monday April 28, 2025, at Twin Ports Health and Rehab.

Clara was born in Phillips, WI on Sept. 25, 1935, the daughter of Bohumil and Lulu (McKibben) Washa. She grew up in the country and was a farm girl at heart. Clara loved animals, especially "oreo" cows and her dogs.

She married Richard Komatz, Sr. on June 5, 1954, and they raised five children. Clara began her working career at the Androy Hotel and later worked at the former Superior Memorial Hospital for over 18 years, retiring in 1997. Clara then volunteered at Essentia Health Superior for 21 years, dedicating over 9,000 hours. She was cherished by all who knew her, spreading her contagious smile and loving personality.

She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church. She enjoyed knitting with the ladies from the Yarn Basket Group, playing solitaire, word searches, planting and growing flowers, and listening to country music. She also enjoyed traveling and had been to many places including Japan, Las Vegas, California, Texas, Nashville, Virginia, and numerous bus trips around the state. Clara was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and even made a trip to Lambeau Field. Family was most important to her; she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; former spouse and lifelong friend, Richard; sisters, May Sir, Arlene Dunbar, and Bettyellen Washa; brothers, Arthur and Richard Washa; and longtime friend, Beverly Shafer.

Clara is survived by her children, Pamela (Gordian "Gordy") Nys of Superior, Peggy (William "Scott") Harmsen of Oregon, Richard "Butch" (Judy) Komatz, Jr. of St. Cloud, Patricia (David)

Gramstrup of Superior; and Anton "Tony" (Karen) Komatz of Newport News, VA; sisters, Irene Peterson of Superior and Lorraine Washa of Foxboro; brother, Robert Washa of Phillips; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and good friend, Mary Lou Munson.
