Clarence O. Mattson, Sr., 89, of Superior, died Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Superior, surrounded by his family.

Clarence was born in Superior on Nov. 13, 1929 the son of Oscar and Alma Mattson. He grew up in Oulu, Wisconsin and married Alice Tutor on March 27, 1948.

He worked as a millwright for US Steel for 30 years and retired from the City of Superior after 10 years working as a mechanic. After retiring he continued to farm until he was 87.

Clarence was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed farming, traveling and working on cars. Their home was always open to anyone. He and Alice were foster parents and hosted foreign exchange students.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother and father-in-law, James and Marjorie Tutor.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Alice; children, Clarence (Sherry) Mattson Jr. of Iron River, Donald (Kay) Mattson of Superior, Kendell (Marie) Mattson of Oulu, Karen (Ronald) Vendela, and Darla (Scott) Bartley of Superior; grandchildren, Brian (Sheri) Mattson, of Superior, Tammy (Mike) Olson of Iron River, Donald Mattson Jr. of Summit, David Mattson, Krista (Eric) DeGraef of Superior, Allen (Lindsey) Mattson of Eau Claire, Adam Mattson of Alaska, Nicholas (Nelda) Mattson of Arizona, Toni (Ray) Tollers of Superior, Anna (James) Banaszak, of New York, Ingrid Vendela, Jacob Bartley, Ryan Bartley of Superior; 16 great-grandchildren and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be on Friday March 8 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 ^th St. Superior. Visitation will resume on Saturday, March 9 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Bethel Lutheran Church, 5821 John Ave. Superior. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Oulu this Spring.

Pallbearers will be his eight grandsons.
