Daniel "Dan" James Lien, 57, of Superior passed peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 with 'his girls' and family by his side.
The courage and bravery Dan showed while navigating through Alzheimer's disease for the past 7 years inspires his family to live life to the fullest and spend quality time together. In true "Danny" fashion, he chose to donate his body to the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota's Medical School for research with the hope of potentially saving many others.
Dan was born on July 5, 1956 in Superior to Floyd and Marcie (Berg) Lien. He was a proud life-long Billings Parker and treasured the many memories he, his family and friends created there. The time spent with his wife and daughters meant so much to him and he was so proud of their accomplishments in gymnastics, skating and college. His spirit and sense of humor lives on in the girls and those who knew him.
Dan graduated from SSHS in 1974. He spent 32 years working at Northwest Outlet, where hockey players and figure skaters for miles around came just to get their skates sharpened by Danno. He loved working for his father-in-law, Cal Miller, whom he respected greatly. He also worked briefly at Billings Park Electric and Northern Natural Gas in North Dakota.
Dan was an outdoor enthusiast and athlete. The times spent with friends golfing, fishing, hunting, bowling, playing softball and hockey were so special to Dan. Some of his fondest memories were from time spent at his "Crack of Noon" hunting shack.
Dan is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 35 years, Sue (Miller) Lien; daughters, Angie (Pieter) Pienaar, Superior and Cassie (Brent) Price, Oak Grove, MN; grandson, Grady Price, Oak Grove, MN; mother, Marcie Lien, Superior; sister, Cathy (Al) Kurtz, Superior; brothers, Greg (Trish) Lien, Forest Lake, MN, Jeff (Julie Basina) Lien, Superior; mother-in-law, Carol Miller; sister-in-law, Betsy (Gary) deVries; brothers-in-law Carl (Sue) Miller & Dave (Mary) Miller; many special cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Lien and father-in-law, Cal Miller.
A celebration of Dan's life will take place at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave., Superior on Tuesday, July 16th from 4-6pm, with a service at 6:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota's Medical School.
Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. is assisting the family with arrangements.
