Obituary

Darlene Marie Groehler, 80, of Superior, WI, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on January 5, 2025, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.

Darlene was born in Superior, WI on March 4, 1944, to Ensel and Mildred (Kronberg) Lundquist. She married Norman Groehler on September 12, 1964, in Superior. They recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

A lifelong resident of Superior, Darlene grew up on a dairy farm on the Darrow Road. Norm first spotted Darlene tossing a bale of hay on the farm while he was riding along with the milk truck driver. It was love at first sight for Norm and the rest, as they say, is history.

Darlene graduated from Superior Central High School in 1962. After graduation, she worked as a bank teller at both National Bank of Commerce and Superior Savings & Loan. Darlene then began working for the School District of Superior in various capacities, including as elementary school secretary at various schools (Patzau, Erickson, Washington, and Bryant); secretary for the Athletic Director at Superior Senior High School; and several years at the Board of Education Office. She concluded her 37-year career with the School District of Superior at Bryant Elementary School, retiring in 2010.

Darlene was a long-time member of Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, where she volunteered in many ways. She was often called upon to assist with financial tasks due to her banking background. Darlene especially enjoyed hosting the pastors and their families each Christmas Eve, between busy church services, to a delicious dinner.  Darlene was a fabulous cook and baker. She and Norm also hosted many Bible studies at their home over the years. In addition, Darlene supported Norm's lay ministry at St. Francis Nursing Home and Royalton Manor by creating small gifts for the residents during the holidays.

During the summer months, Darlene could often be spotted out in the field, raking hay, at the hobby farm where she and Norm raised their family. Darlene kept very busy. In the little spare time she had, Darlene enjoyed knitting, reading, camping, and staying up to date on the latest technology. She was proficient on her computer and iPad, and used her skills to create greeting cards, print and laminate photos, and stay in touch with family and friends by email.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Norm; children, DeAnn (Nathan) Carlsgaard of Superior, and Paul (Debra) Groehler of Rochester, Minnesota. Four grandchildren: Sanna Carlsgaard, and Aaron, Sydney, and Gavin Groehler; brother-in-law Kenneth Groehler; nieces Leah (David Penn) Groehler and Stephanie (Andrew) Monk; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dean Lundquist, her parents, nephew Jared Groehler, and sister-in-law Corinne Groehler.

Darlene loved her family fiercely. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren, and always enjoyed time with them. Until her memory began to fail her, Darlene and Norm were rarely seen apart. Their love and dedication to each other was evident to all who knew them.

A celebration of her life will begin with a visitation starting at 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. service Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, 4020 S. Darrow Road, Superior. Reverend John Fleming will officiate.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or Darrow Road Wesleyan Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at New Perspectives Memory Care, Essentia Hospice Home Care, and Solvay Hospice House for the care they provided to Darlene.
