David R. Holmes, 77, of Oliver, died Monday, August 17, 2015 at Essentia-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
David was born on March 13, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of Carl and Lois (Walker) Holmes.
He served his country enlisting in the Army and then the Navy from 1960 to 1970. During his service he was deployed for a tour in Viet Nam.
David enjoyed cooking and worked in various restaurants in the area. He had also worked as a cook for the Union Gospel Mission in Duluth for 13 years. He had also worked sailing the Great Lakes on the ships. He enjoyed sports and was an animal lover.
David was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Kathleen Holmes.
He is survived by his children, Rebecca Sash of Duluth, John Holmes of Duluth, and Brian (Carla) Holmes of Superior; grandchildren, Jerrod, Jeremy, Donnamae, Kevin, Christian, and Madison; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Darius; a brother, Gary Holmes of Colorado; nieces and nephew, Amy, Karen and Matthew; the mother of his children, Alice Waltz of Duluth; and his lifelong friend, Julie VanHorn.
Visitation will be on Sat. Sept. 12, from 11:00 a.m. until the Noon memorial service at Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. Pastor Kyle Ashcroft, of Dewey-Borea Gospel Tabernacle, will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery Veterans Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435.
