Dennis E. Mackiewicz, 63, formerly of Superior, died Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Minnesota Veteran's Home in Minneapolis, of complications from cancer.

He was born December 21, 1950 in Superior, son of Joseph and Frances Mackiewicz. He was raised in Allouez Acres and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1969.

Dennis was a Vietnam era Coast Guard veteran whose hazardous duty included tracking Soviet submarines through the ice pack above the Arctic Circle as well as surviving a severe November gale in the North Atlantic on an incapacitated ice breaker. His four year commitment ended in 1973 with an honorable discharge.

Preceding him in death were his parents and infant sister, Mary.
Survivors include his brothers, Joseph (Sherry), Tony (Roberta), Stephen (Della), John, Michael (Cathy), and Edward (fiancée, Mary). Also survived by nieces, Lisa (Douglas) Hughes, Jo Marie (David Allen) Mackiewicz, Stefania, Alayna, Pamela, Jessica Mongelos (Jorge Melgarejo), Sara (David) Wartman, and Catherine (Matthew) Chu, as well as nephews, Justin, his godchild, and John (Amanda). Finally he leaves behind two grandnephews, Christian Mongelos and Elian Chu and three grandnieces, Jillian and Katharine Hughes and Zoe Chu.

Visitation will be from 5 until the 7 p.m. rosary service, Friday, October 3, 2014, at Downs Funeral Home, and will resume at 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, October 4th at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Superior. Reverend Father Donald Kania will be the celebrant. Military rites will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435, outside of the church, following the Mass.

The family invites everyone to a luncheon in the parish hall immediately following the service.

Following the luncheon, the family will travel to Herbster, Wisconsin, for the committal service at the Herbster Cemetery.

Cards and personal notes are most welcome, but Dennis said that he preferred that instead of flowers and remembrance gifts, memorials could go to the Solid Rock Safe Haven in Superior.
