Desmond J. "Des" Kieser, 90, of Superior, died Monday, September 5, 2016, at his residence.
He was born July 20, 1926 in Webster, WI, son of John and Ella (Senn) Kieser.
As a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, he spent all of his time in the South Pacific serving on the USS Hamlin. Some of the islands he participated in was the invasion of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and several others. He was in Tokyo Bay for the formal ceremonies on September 2, 1945, on the deck of the USS Missouri. Des earned many battle stars and ribbons. He was a member of the VFW Post 1091, Military Order of Cooties and the American Legion.
Des was a member of Central Assembly of God for many years; where he taught Sunday school, Bible quizzing, coached the men's softball team, and led the Son Seekers senior citizen group, just to mention some of his church commitments.
His sports teams of interest were the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers.
Des worked at Murphy Oil Refinery for over 26 years as a pipefitter/welder.
Preceding him in death were his parents; daughters, Cathy Venci (Joe), and Karen VanRossem (Dick); son, Bruce Kieser; daughter-in-law, Sharon Kieser; sisters, Minnie Brent, Lyda Brown and Constance Kieser; and brother, Ronald Kieser.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, DeLores Kieser; son, Thomas (Cheryl) Kieser; daughter, Desie (John) Conway; 14 grandchildren, Michael and David Venci, Brianna Muller, Mark and Matt VanRossem, Desmond and Brock Kieser, Andrew and Michael Conway, Annie Schumacher, Curtis, Natasha and Lonnie Kieser, and Crissy Snyder; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Alamae Flahaven.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2016 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, and will resume at 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday, at Central Assembly of God, 3000 Hammond Avenue, Superior. Pastor Tom Miller will officiate.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
The family invites everyone to a luncheon at the church immediately following the service.
Following the luncheon, the committal prayers will be at Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne, with military rites accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435.
