Dominic A Moselle, 85, of Superior, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2010.
He was born in Gile, WI on June 3, 1925, the son of Chris and Mary (Rosetti) Moselle.
Dom married Patricia O'Keefe on Dec, 30, 1950 at Cathedral of Christ the King.
Dom attended Hurley High School and played football, basketball, and baseball, graduating in 1943. He was in WWII with the U.S. Army, stationed in Guam and Hawaii 1944-45. He then attended and graduated from the U.W. - Superior (formerly Superior State Teachers College) with a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education. While at U.W.-Superior he was a four year letter winner, team captain, and was designated all-conference in football and basketball. He holds several U.W.-Superior Yellowjacket records. He was all time leader for most yards gained in a career, 2652 on 491 carries between 1946-49; most yards gained in one season, 962 on 120 carries in 1948; and most yards rushing in one game, 226. He holds the record for most touchdowns in a single season, single game and career. He was an all time leader in kick-off returns for touchdowns. In 1973 Dom was inducted in the U.W.-Superior Hall of Fame. Dom was the first ever drafted from the Wisconsin State University Conference into the National Football League. He played from 1950-55. Dom played for the world champion Cleveland Browns in 1950. He then went on to play for the Green Bay Packers, ranking 2nd in kick-off returns, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Calgary Stampede in Canada. Positions played were halfback, defensive back, and return kickoffs. Following his N.F.L career he earned his Masters of Educations Degree from Indiana State University and then coached and taught three years at Wabash Indiana College. He returned to U.W.-Superior as an educator in Health and Physical Education. He also coached football, basketball, baseball, and track. He retired in 1986. In 1996 he was inducted into the Superior Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to the aforementioned sports, Dom also enjoyed conditioning, running and golfing. Following retirement, he continued playing and following sports, but his true pride and joy in life was always his family!
Dominic was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, N.F.L. Retirees Association and the American Federation of Teachers of Wisconsin.
Dom was preceded in death by granddaughter Christina Moselle, brothers Art and Joe Moselle.
Dom is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Gene (Roberta) Moselle, Mark (Sandy) Moselle, Susan (Michael) Collins, all of Superior; grandchildren, Sarah Moselle, Jason, Anthony and Jennifer Moselle, Michael, Scott, Joseph, and William Collins; and great-granddaughter, Christina.
A private Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church will be held at a later date.
Pallbearers will be Dom's eight grandchildren.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
