Dorothy B. Holmgren, 89, of Duluth, formerly of southern Minnesota, died Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Franciscan Health Center, Duluth.
She was born May 3, 1921 in Bengough, Saskatchewan, daughter of Pearl (Magie) and Harry LaFontaine.
Dorothy was a 1941 graduate from Northern State University, South Dakota.
For four years she taught school in McPherson County, South Dakota, and also worked two years for the Oregon State Tax Commission.
She was a former member of First Lutheran Church, Lafayette, Minnesota, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
In 1994 Dorothy moved to Duluth and lived at the Greysolon Plaza, before moving to the Franciscan Health Center.
Knitting, reading, delivering Meals on Wheels and spending time with her Siamese cats brought her great enjoyment; however, her greatest love was spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Harris Holmgren in 1988; sister, Dolores; and brother, Bernard.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Sislo, Superior; 2 granddaughters, Lori (Ryan) Berggren, Superior, and Tricia (Steve) Heller, Maplewood, Minnesota; 4 great-grandchildren, Ronnie Jeanne, Baylee, Joshua and Emma; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior. Chaplain Gary Meller will officiate.
Following the service, everyone is invited to a luncheon at Bayside Baptist Church, Superior.
Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2010 at First Lutheran Cemetery, Lafayette.
