Obituary

Dorothy May Johnson, 82, a longtime South Superior, Wis. resident passed away Sat., Oct. 16, 2010 at the Harmony House II Assisted Living Home.

Dorothy was born May 5, 1928 in Superior and grew up in the north end of the city and graduated from Central High School. On July 2, 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Charles Johnson and they celebrated 59 years of marriage until Ken died on Jan. 25, 2009.

Throughout Dorothy's life she enjoyed the great outdoors. She and Kenneth loved hunting and fishing and they made several trips to Canada to camp on the islands and fish with friends; although her favorite place to camp was at the Oak Ridge Resort on Lower Webb Lake near Danbury, Wis., where she and Ken, with family and friends spent many a happy day. She loved to sit by the campfire, sipping a warm Bud through a straw and reminiscing while the stew simmered on the outdoor woodstove that Kenneth made. We all have many fond memories of her distinctive and contagious laugh.

In her later years Dorothy loved to watch the birds and squirrels from the comfort of her home and lastly from her bedroom window at Harmony.

Dorothy's most proud and precious memories came from the time she spent with her two grandsons, Chad and Troy, and Chad's dog Ozzie (which she called her "great-granddogger"). She never forgot the time Troy caught 7 lb. Large Mouth Bass ice fishing when he was 5 years old and also how he excelled at hockey and darts.

To Chad she was always "Grandma Jim". She loved to watch him bowl and bragged about his scores to everyone in South Superior.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther E. (Honkanen) and Napoleon James LeMier; her loving husband; a sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Dennis Starr; and nephews, Blake Starr and John and Joseph Fedyn.

Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Donald "Butch" Clark of Superior; grandsons, Chad and Troy Clark both of Superior; three nephews, Tony and Kenny Fedyn and Randy (Barb) Starr; a niece, Barbara (Paul) Zastrow; and great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospice, especially Gary and Amy for their support and understanding during this difficult time. A special thank you is extended to the staff at Harmony House II. We will be forever grateful for the kindness and unending dedication you provided to Dorothy. You have all earned your "Angel Wings".

Her memorial service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. & 19th St., with Rev. Gary Garnatz, Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
