Obituary

Duane D. Betterman, 88, longtime Superior resident, passed away on Wednesday June 10, 2026, at his residence surrounded by family.

Duane was born in Miltona Township, MN on March 9, 1938, the son of Robert and Ella (Gezelle) Betterman.

He graduated from Two Harbors High School, with the class of 1956. On July 3, 1959, Duane and Jeanette Broers were married in Eudora, KS and they celebrated 67 years together.

He served his country honorably for six years within the US Air Force. He was employed for over 30 years in the grocery industry as a manager and consultant to independent retailers. He finished his working career as a member of the Lenroot-Maetzold and Downs-LeSage funeral homes.

Duane was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and regularly attended Beth Yeshua Twin Ports Messianic congregation. Duane enjoyed working with the youth at Zion Lutheran Church in the Logos Youth Program.

Duane enjoyed working and training with others and their companion dogs for competition. He could often be found on the golf course improving his swing on the fairway. Duane had many hobbies which included cross-stitch, woodworking, and designing string art cards. He loved to share his creations with family and friends.

Duane, along with his wife Jeanette, were very supportive and loved following their children with High School sports, YMCA Rifle Team, and Drama performances. Hunting, fishing, and camping trips with family and friends were a highlight and many wonderful memories were made. Duane and Jeanette relished their time together with family and friends while camping for 30 years at Top O’ The Morn campground in Iron River, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and granddaughter, Rhianon Betterman.

Duane is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette; children, Mark (Sue) Betterman, JoAnn (Mel) Mattson, Lisa (Bob) Doolittle, and LeAnn (Mark) Ulvi; grandchildren, Bryan (Christina Mencel) Mattson, Ian Mattson, Andrew (Elyse) Mattson, Jared (Katey) Betterman, Jon (Kara) Ulvi, Cassandra (Justin) Lanning; step grandchildren, Angela (Jason) Mo, Allena (James) Lyons, Justin Doolittle, and Dylan Hall; great-grandchildren, Ella, Mila, Kyla, Paislee, Maverick, Charlie, Sophie, Penelope, Ezra, and one on the way; nine step great-grandchildren; sister, Donna (Adrian) Ranta; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 16th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Kirk Schield as officiant. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. American Legion Post #435.
