Melkon

Edward J. Melkon of Superior, WI, died July 22, 2018, at Villa Marina Health and Rehab. He was born November 24, 1921, the youngest of nine children of John and Sophia Melkon in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
He attended schools in New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and a minor in education from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. He did two and a half years of post-graduate work in moral and dogmatic theology at St. John's School of Theology.
He worked for the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railroad in the accounting and finance dept. in Duluth, Minn. Retiring in 1984.
He was married to the former Mary Higgins in 1957 at the Cathedral of Christ the King Church in Superior by her late brother, Fr. Joseph Higgins.
He was a lifelong member of the Superior Elks Club #403 and the Knights of Columbus #499. He is a member of the Duluth Superior Transportation Club.
Ed was an avid baseball fan and attended numerous big-league games while living in New York and New Jersey. He also enjoyed watching all sports and socializing with friends.
After they were married, Ed and his wife, Mary, joined St. Francis in Superior since they lived in East End. Ed served as an usher at Sunday Mass at St. Francis.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his 8 siblings. His wife Mary died in 2016 and his nephew, Robert Melkon, in 2014.
He is survived by nieces, Regina Mayo, Claire Thomas, and Joan Nicole and nephew, John Melkon, all of whom live in New Jersey or the East Coast. Ed is also survived by nieces, Joan Godfrey, Jean Higgins, Jacklyn Cordts, Jennifer Sloan, Margaret Hoadley, Mary Jo LaValley, Edward Higgins, John Higgins, and Thomas Higgins, all from the Duluth/Superior area.
Ed's visitation will be on Monday, July 30, 2018, from 10:00 until the 11:00 Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Church in Superior. Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
If desired, memorials may be made in Ed's name to the Salvation Army or charity of donor's choice.
