Eileen S.G. (Saunders) Erickson, 88, died peacefully on January 28, 2015 at the Lighthouse in Superior.
She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Oct. 2, 1926 and graduated in nursing from the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1954. She joined the staff of the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, and after further training, obtained a diploma in radiotherapy from the Canadian Society of Radiological Technicians.
It was in Canada that Eileen met her future husband, Bruce Erickson, who after serving as a US Navy corpsman, obtained a science degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg which led to his degree in pharmacology. Eileen and Bruce then moved to Superior, Bruce's hometown, where he worked as the pharmacist at Memorial Hospital and Eileen was employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
Eileen and Bruce quietly embraced life together, making time to travel extensively and to fish on Lake Nebagamon. (Eileen went along on the boat just to be with Bruce).
Having survived tuberculosis earlier in her life and heart attacks in later years, Eileen was steadfast in her dedication to living a heart healthy lifestyle. A talented artist, her life's passion was painting in multiple media. In her later years, she devoted her talents to drawings of animals, a cause close to her heart. She continued to meet regularly with her art group which gave her the opportunity to continue her passion and enjoy cherished friendships with fellow artists.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce, her parents, her brother, Stanley Saunders, and sister, Evelyn Sawyer.
She is survived by a cousin, Olga Stoneman, Winnipeg, and Bruce's cousins, Carol Carey, Madison and Jan Brose, Rockville, Maryland.
A special thank you is extended to Debbie Else, a "Superior" friend who was always there for Eileen.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery with Pastor Joel Huenemann officiating followed by an English Tea at 3 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church, 229 North 28th Street East. All friends and associates of Eileen and Bruce Erickson and their family are invited.
