Eleanor "Ellie" Marie Austreng, age 90, Superior, died on August 19, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

Eleanor was born on February 27, 1929, in Superior to Harry and Thelma Tempelis. She was known as "the original Greek Princess", as the only daughter of a Greek immigrant cobbler and a nurse.  She was the second oldest of four children and adored her three brothers, Connie, Jim and Larry, as much as they loved and adored her.  Eleanor met George Austreng around age 5 as she was reading the funny papers one Sunday when her older brother, Connie, brought him home.  She was instantly smitten and said she knew at that moment he was going to be her man.  She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1947 and went on to obtain a degree in Elementary Education from Superior State Teachers College.  Eleanor and George married on June 19, 1950, after George returned from serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and before serving in the Korean War.

Other than a brief time in Houghton, Michigan, Eleanor and George were lifelong Superior residents. They spent 62 years together, enjoying dancing, going for walks, rummaging and raising their sons, Greg and Steve.  She was a loving and caring mother and was affectionately referred to as "Gammō" by her three grandsons.  Eleanor taught elementary school students for 25 years in the Superior School District and retired in 1988.  She was full of energy and always had a smile on her face.  Eleanor loved being with her family and many friends and was known for her generous spirit.  She also loved to travel, made beautiful quilts and everyone loved her delicious Greek lasagna and chocolate chip cookies.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; her brothers, Constantine and Laurence Tempelis; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Tempelis and Rita Austreng, and brother-in-law, John Austreng.

Eleanor is survived by her sons, Greg (Jody) Austreng and Steve (Donna) Austreng; grandchildren, Dustin (Robin, fiancé), Tyler (Alysa) and Nicholas (Amanda); great-grandchildren, Elsa and Theo; as well as her brother, James (Barbara) Tempelis, sister-in-law Jane Tempelis and brother-in-law, Jay Austreng; as well as many other relatives and friends.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful people at Harmony House, who have taken care of her with love the past few years, as well as the staff at St. Luke's.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 22, 2019, memorial service at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior. Reverend Michelle Rowell will officiate. Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Superior.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.
