Elizabeth Jeanne Smith Jewell ("Betty"), 90, of Superior, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Sunday, December 13, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospice in Duluth, surrounded by family.
Betty was born on November 29, 1925 near Lapeer County, Marathon Township (Otter Lake, MI) to William Arthur and Alice Maude (Crippen) Smith. She graduated from Otter Lake High School in 1943 and received a teaching certificate the following year. She taught in one-room country schools in Michigan until her marriage in 1946. Betty returned to teaching following the birth of her oldest children. She was a full-time homemaker but attended school to complete her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Beginning in 1972, she worked as an elementary school teacher-librarian in several Duluth schools. She earned a Master of Science degree in education prior to her retirement from the Duluth Public Schools in 1992.
Betty married Kenneth Cameron Jewell at St. John's Episcopal Church, Otter Lake, MI on January 5, 1946. The Jewells moved with their three eldest children to Superior in 1958, where Betty would spend the rest of her life and raise four more children. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.
Betty was very active in the community. Her volunteer career included active membership in the PEO sorority, the Red Hat Society, the Superior Area Retired Educators' Association, and St. Alban the Martyr Episcopal Church. Betty also volunteered at the Richard I. Bong Historical Center. She taught English as a Second Language as a volunteer at WITC.
After significant research by her son Ken, it was discovered that through her mother's side of the family (Crippen) that Betty was a descendant of Myles Standish and eligible for membership in the Mayflower Society. She was inducted into the Society in 2003.
Betty is survived by daughters JoAnn (Ken) Mandy, Racine; Jane (John) Fisher-Merritt, Wrenshall; Margaret (Alan) Mealey, Aberfoyle, Scotland; Laurie (Daniel) Rosin, Milwaukee; and Lisa (Robert Stein) Jewell, Racine; and by a son, Kenneth (Donna) Jewell, Spring Creek, NV. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jeanne; a son, Robert Cameron; her parents; sisters Cleah and Leila Smith, Otter Lake, MI; Ruth Dwelley, Darien, GA; and William Smith, Midland, MI.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2015, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, and will resume at 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection Saturday, December, 19, 2015 at the Church of St. Alban the Martyr, 1510 New York Avenue, Superior.
The committal prayers will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with all arrangements.
If desired, memorials in Betty's name may be made to the Church of St. Alban the Martyr, Superior or the Superior Public Library, or the charity of the donor's choice.
