Elwood H. Thoreson, 84, of Superior, died Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born on August 5, 1933, the son of Timmy and Evelyn (Hanson) Thoreson in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

Elwood proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

On June 3, 1955 in Superior, Elwood Thoreson and Diana Hawley were united in marriage.

As a long-time member of the I.B.E.W. Local #242, he worked as an electrician for Benson Electric.

He enjoyed bowling, was a Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Twins fan, and loved ice cream.

Elwood's faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior was a priority of his life.  His church family was Calvary Baptist Church, Superior. Some of his responsibilities included Sunday school teacher and superintendent, deacon and trustee.

Elwood is survived by his wife of 62 years, Diana; daughters, Kathy (Michael) Izzard of Superior, and Candy (Gary) Cooke of Elysian, MN; sons, Ron (Bev) Thoreson of Shorewood, IL, and Jerry (Sandi) Thoreson of Duluth; 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; brothers, Kermit (Lenora) Thoreson of Spicer, MN, and Don (Phyllis) Thoreson of Anoka, MN; sisters, Eleanor Heytens and Beverly Lundgren, both of Superior; and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be on Friday, August 11, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. funeral service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 ^th Street, Superior.  Elwood's son, Jerry Thoreson, and Rev. Alan Schroeder will co-officiate.

Pallbearers will be Elwood's 6 grandsons.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 followed by a reception at the Billings Park Civic Center.
