Emily Ann (Campbell) Demgen, 95, of Superior and Solon Springs, died on Thursday, November 14, 2013, in St Luke's Hospital.
Emily was born in Superior, the daughter of Ford S. Campbell, Sr., and Emily Scharabon Campbell. She attended Villa Scholastica high school in Duluth and graduated from Superior Central. After a year at Superior State College (now UW-Superior), she transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
During WWII, she worked for the Red Cross in the Milwaukee area and then ran the service club at Ft. Sheridan. Returning to Superior after the war, she met and married Robert J (Bob) Demgen on October 11, 1947, and raised two daughters. They were members of Cathedral of Christ the King parish. Bob and Emily spent many memorable years at their summer home in Solon Springs, and after Bob's retirement, winters in Palm Springs, CA.
An active community leader, Emily continued to volunteer with the Red Cross and, in 1970, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Northland Chapter. She was a Grey Lady and organized the VolunTeen corps to work in the Superior hospitals.
Among her many other activities were the Superior Garden Club #1, the board of the Douglas County Historical Society, the Solon Springs Historical Society, the Greysolon Daughters of Liberty Chapter of the DAR, the Duluth Woman's Club, and her volunteer work at St Francis in the Park nursing home, Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, and St Mary's Hospital Superior, where she loved making blankets for patients and served as Vice President of the Hospital Auxiliary. In May, 2011, she was named "Port Cities Woman of the Year."
Emily's husband died in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Ford, Jr., Joseph, and Donald.
Surviving are her daughters, Julie Demgen of Superior and Newark, DE, and Sara Garfield of Stockton, CA; granddaughters Jen (Gary Sleppy and Jaime (Darren) Imus of Sacramento, CA; great-grandson Dillon of Sacramento; sisters Jeanne Frodesen of Superior and Joyce Schick of Davenport, Iowa; cousins Merrie Detlefsen of Hopkins, MN, and Rod Campbell of Superior; and many nephews, nieces, and dear friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr Gene Karwoski, the staff at St Luke's Hospital, and the Hospice staff for their wonderful care of Emily. We are also grateful to her caregivers Lorrie, Liz and Chris, Judith, and Lisa.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 19, at Holy Assumption Church, where Emily was baptized and married, with Visitation at 10am and Mass at 11am. Pallbearers will be Rod Campbell, Mark Frodesen, Bob Fuhrman, Chris Fuhrman, Jim Banks, Peter Banks, and John Murphy.
