Ethel May "Scal" Hathaway, 81, of Superior died Thurs. Sept. 10, 2009 at her residence.
Ethel was born in Spooner, Wis. on July 23, 1928 the daughter of Ethel Martina (Bates) and Samuel Swonger.
She was a surgical tech at SMDC for many years. She loved quilting, traveling, baking and fishing. Most important to her was being with her family.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles K. Hathaway; two sons, Raymond on Sept. 16, 2004 and Samuel on Nov. 15, 1997; a step-son, Don Hathaway; and a brother Bill Swonger.
She is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Ted) Swenson of Cloquet, Minn., Ardell Breitung of Crookston, Minn., Shelby (Steve) Shelton of Adell, Wis. and Rita (Tom) White of Barron, Wis.; a son Kenneth (Tracey) Hathaway of Superior; a step-daughter, Janet (John) Davis of Kirkland, Ill.; two daughters-in-law, Ruth Hathaway of Illinois and Brenda Hathaway of Duluth; Richard "Richie" Shaver of Spooner; grandchildren, James Jr., George, Leland, Lonnie and Candy Love, Michael and Jill Breitung, LuAlice, Samuel Jr. and Nakeda Hathaway, Steve and Skylar Shelton, Shelby, Thomasina and Robert White, Kent, Brad, Nathan and Tyler Hathaway, Angel and Lilly Hathaway; many great-grandchildren and three great-great-granddaughters; three sisters, Dorothy DuBoise, Elsie Usselman and Wilma Foster; two brothers, Charles and Walter "Buster" Swonger; many nieces and nephews; and her dog Molly.
Visitation will be on Mon. Sept. 14 from 5-7 p.m. and continue on Tues. Sept. 15 from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. Rev. Robert Baranow will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
