Evelyn Lorraine Anna Gella, 89, of Superior, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet, MN.
She was born February 19, 1926 in Highbridge, Wisconsin, daughter of Matt and Freda (Mikkonen) Erickson.
Evelyn graduated from Ashland High School, and went onto college graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and later earning her Master's Degree in Reading in 1971. She taught 23 years for the Superior School District, teaching at the Oliver School, South Range Elementary, Erickson Elementary, and retiring from Pattison Elementary School. She also had taught at Cooper, the Maple Corner School and the Claude Allouez Academy Catholic School.
Her name Evelyn meant full of life, joyful and spirited, of which she demonstrated every day.
Evelyn met the love of her life, Frank Gella on New Year's Eve, 1946, and on May 17, 1947, they were married.
Evelyn was proud of her family. She was able to spend time with family, and enjoyed going out to eat with them and visiting.
Her memberships included Cathedral of Christ the King, Catholic Daughters and the Retired Teachers Association.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; brothers, William and Matt Erickson; and grandson, Brian Gella.
Survivors include her children, Tim (Cheryl) Gella, Nancy (Jeff) Runions, Greg (Paula) Gella and Robert (Sonja) Gella; grandchildren, Christa and Neil Runions, Corey, Lindsay, Derek, Lily, Bailey, Tony, Natalie, and Lauren Gella; great-grandson, Adrian Gella; sister, Jane (Larry) Holm; brother, Roy (Eleanor) Erickson; and many nieces and nephews.
As this lovely blue-eyed Finnish girl leaves this earth, her family will meet her in heaven.
The visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, September 4, 2015, at Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior. The celebrant will be Reverend Father Andrew P. Ricci.
Pallbearers will be Tim, Greg, Bob, Corey, and Tony Gella, and Jeff and Neil Runions.
Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior.
