Francis "Frank" J. McCarvill, age 99, passed from this life to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Essential Health-St.Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Frank was born in Brainerd, MN on February 10, 1913 to Jay and Alice (Mooney) McCarvill. He attended grade school in Deerwood, MN and graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1931. After graduating from High School, he started to work for his dad on the Northern Pacific Railroad. He continued his work with the railroad until his retirement as track supervisor with the Burlington Railroad in 1975.
On June 6, 1942, Frank married Barbara Brandt, a friend and classmate from Deerwood.
Frank proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in England and France from 1942 to 1945. Following his time over seas with the Army, he returned to Deerwood where he and Barbara started their family, Mary and Michael.
Frank and his family moved to Superior in 1955, where he continued his work with the railroad. He enjoyed many years of camping with his kids and grandkids. He and Barbara traveled throughout the United States and Canada with friends they met in travel clubs. He was an avid hunter and he loved to fish and trap. He enjoyed tinkering and doing woodwork in his shop.
Frank loved his family, his church, and he was always very proud of his Irish heritage. Frank was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, American Legion Post of Deerwood, MN and the BN Retirees group.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Barbara (Brandt) McCarvill in 2004; brothers, Joseph, Thomas, James; and sisters, Margaret, and Betty.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary (Robert) Johnson, Barnes, WI; son, Michael McCarvill, Superior; two grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) Johnson, Superior, and Erika (Tim) Kaufman, Poplar, WI; six great-grandchildren, Adelyn, Tucker and Wyatt Johnson, and Tanner, Jay and Tori Kaufman.
Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, January 11, 2013 at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, Superior. Reverend Father Ronald Olson will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, with military rites accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.
Pallbearers will be Richard Schneider, Thomas Brandt, William Bronson, Jack Gallagher, James McCarvill, and Mark Johnson.
Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials to Holy Assumption Church or Salvation Army of Superior are preferred in lieu of flowers.
