Fredolph "Fred" Arnold Tunell Jr., age 91, passed away peacefully on March 3rd, 2026.
Fred was born on December 5, 1934, in Cambridge to Fredolph and Violet (Nelson) Tunell. He was raised on the family farm east of Cambridge on Skogman Lake, where he learned the values of hard work, faith, and family. He attended Moody School, a one-room country schoolhouse, and later graduated from Cambridge High School in 1954.
Fred continued his education at Bethel College before serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He was stationed in Chuncheon, South Korea near the DMZ following the Korean War, he drove the truck that launched the "Honest John"missile.
On June 8, 1957, Fred married his childhood sweetheart, Jan Ostrom. Together they shared nearly 69 years of faithful marriage, building a life centered on Christ, family, and service.
Fred worked for Nielsen (formerly A.C. Nielsen Co.) in Green Bay, Wisconsin and Lincoln, Nebraska before returning north in 1977. He and Jan purchased the A&W Restaurant on Belknap Avenue in Superior, Wisconsin, which they operated together for 22 years. Fred was known as a steady, encouraging employer who took genuine interest in the young people he hired, modeling integrity and kindness in both business and life.
Following retirement, Fred served part-time as an administrator at Bayside Baptist Church. His faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. He lived with gratitude for God's grace and forgiveness.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Delores (Albert) Cole and Betty Ann (Edward) Maslon; his nephew, Eddie Maslon; and his beloved granddaughter, Erin Tunell Pearson.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Jan; his sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Michelle, David and Barbara, and Richard and Renee; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; extended family; and many dear friends.
Fred's legacy is one of steadfast faith, servant-hearted leadership, and deep love for his family. His life reflected quiet strength, integrity, and enduring trust in the Lord.
Memorials are preferred and will be donated to Living Stones International or Wycliffe Bible Missionary to support (Jase and Jana Tunell).
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service in Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N 34th St., Superior, WI, with Pastor Derrick Stewart and Pastor Thomas Bush co-officiating. Military honors according by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 honor guard.
Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
