Frederick William Piper, 76, of Superior, died Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
He was born on September 17, 1939 in Superior, WI, where he resided his entire life; he was the oldest of eight children. Fred graduated from Cathedral High School.
Fred was proceeded in death by his mother, Mary "Lorraine" McDonough and his father Robert "Bob" Piper, along with two siblings, Judy McConnel and Kitty Carpenter.
Fred is survived by his wife, Judith Ann, with whom he raised four beautiful children, Corina Kolanczyk (Jerry), Dana Kiesner (Michael), Cara Curry (Brian) and Dale Piper (Tina). Fred is also survived by daughter, Mary Ann Lamb of Hollywood, Florida.
Fred shared his last twenty seven years with his beloved partner, Erin Murphy. Fred liked to say that they were like peas and carrots, and as long as they were together they would never go hungry. Fred and Erin were best friends and enjoyed many amazing adventures during their time together, residing in Solon Springs. During Fred's illness, Erin was honored to provide Fred with the loving care that he so deserved.
Also surviving are siblings James Johnson, Barbara Piper, Jackie Johnson, Mary Paulus and Debbie Abbott, along with many nieces, nephews, and beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Fred's passion in life was construction, and he referred to himself as the "Builder Boy." He was most happy when he was in the middle of a big project and loved sharing the results with his loved ones. He built about 150 family homes in Superior and remodeled several businesses in his tenure as owner and CEO of Superior Quality Builders. Fred also started several other successful businesses and owned many rentals in Superior.
Fred earned a 3rd degree black belt in judo and spent many years competing and teaching with much success. He was Minnesota State Champion multiple years running and was twice invited to participate in the Pan American Games; he taught Judo for over ten years at the local YMCA.
Fred loved nothing more than playing cribbage with family and friends, and he told all that would listen that he was one of the best players in the Twin Ports area, "I'm pretty good at this game". He also loved competitive billiards, where he excelled.
Fred loved people and was blessed with many friends who enjoyed his quick wit and the twinkle in his eyes. Many of his business acquaintances became close friends who got together to play poker at his warehouse on Thursday nights.
Fred left a huge impression on all those who were blessed to know him, and his passing leaves an enormous hole in the hearts of many.
Visitation will be Monday, September 19, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until the noon memorial service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 th Street. Officiating will be Pastor Jason Clifton. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne.
A special thanks for the care and support afforded to Fred during his illness in recent years by PA Conrad Ross of Essentia. In lieu of flowers, Fred requested donations be sent to the Salvation Army.
