George Robert Austreng, age 85, Superior, died April, 5th, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, after a brief illness.
George was born January 8, 1928, in Superior to Oswald and Lillian Austreng. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the States at the end of World War II. After his service, George entered Superior State Teachers College on the GI Bill and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. He returned to service with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950-1951. Before re-deploying, George married Eleanor Tempelis, the love of his life, on June 19, 1950. George and Eleanor met as young children in Superior. They were married over 62 years.
After his Korean War service, George and Eleanor moved to Houghton, Michigan, where George taught at Houghton High School for one year before returning to Superior. George began teaching at Superior Central High School and held a certificate to teach mathematics, chemistry and physics. In 1965, George took a position to teach at the new Superior Senior High School. He obtained his Master of Science in teaching degree from Wisconsin State University Superior in 1967. Eleanor was also a teacher in Superior. They retired from teaching in 1988.
From high school until it closed, George enjoyed working in various capacities at Quickprint on Tower Avenue.
George always enjoyed time at the cabin on Long Lake near Solon Springs that he with his father and two sons built. He loved working the land and spending time with family and friends at his summer home. George was also an avid rummager, general woodworker, bicycler, snowmobiler and cross-country skier. He also was an avid supporter of UWS and Superior High School hockey.
George was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; two sons, Greg (Jody) of Superior and Steve (Donna) of Coon Rapids, MN; three grandsons, Dustin, Nicholas and Tyler; brother, Jay Austreng, Superior; as well as many dear relatives and friends
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the 12 noon, Wednesday, April 10, 2013 memorial service at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior. Reverend Charles Plaster will officiate.
Following the benediction at the church, military rites will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.
Inurnment will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Superior, at a later date.
Honorary pallbearers will be his fellow teaching companions and the Quickprint coffee clutch.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.
