Obituary

After a long and full life, George Arthur Perpich, 86, born in Crosby, Minn. Dec. 29, 1928, and longtime resident of Superior, Wisc. died peacefully, Friday, Dec. 18 with his daughters, Tina Perpich and Gina Welck by his side.

He has joined his beloved wife, Virginia Mae Karlon Herubin Perpich, and his stepson Richard Herubin II, who preceded him in death.

His daughters Tina (Shawn Wallace) and Gina (Roger) Welck survive him; as do his stepchildren, Barb (Brad) Counter, Raymond (Donna) Herubin, John (Terry) Herubin, Kathleen (Dwight) Willoughby, and Mark Herubin; and 21 grandchildren.

George's life was long and industrious. After overseas service in the Korean War, he settled in Superior and opened The Bolero Bar. With a flair for the dramatic, he vowed to marry Virginia the moment she walked into his bar. Virginia was skeptical of the bachelor well into his 30s. But, after a brief courtship, they married in 1963. They proceeded to raise Virginia's six children from her first marriage, and added two of their own. To support his family, George sold the bar and hired on at a steel mill in Duluth, and then as a Twin Ports longshoreman for nearly 30 years. Fulfilling a longtime promise, he and Virginia traveled annually to Hawaii, several times to Mexico, and once to Greece with all four daughters. After his wife's death, George's health declined. Honoring his wishes to avoid a nursing home, his youngest daughter Gina, a nurse, her husband Roger and their family kindly cared for George in their home for his last five years. Those closest to George will remember his generosity; his love for his family, especially his wife, his mother Margaret and his grandchildren; his ever-present stash of candies for sharing; his often-practiced motto: If you cannot sing good, sing loud; and his affinity for Buddha. May the words of Buddha live on in his memory: To understand everything is to forgive everything.

Per George's request, there will be no formal service. The family will celebrate his life privately. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with his wife. Those so inspired can donate in memory of George to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave., is assisting the family with arrangements.
