Obituary

George William “Bronc” Skandel, age 74, of Superior, passed away at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth on Monday May 18, 2026, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

George was born February 22, 1952, in Superior, WI, to Mary (Linski) and Stanley Skandel. He graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1970. George married the former Kathryn Peterson on July 21, 1973, and they celebrated 52 wonderful years together. He honorably served in the United States Air Force from March of 1972 until March of1977. After serving his country, he worked his entire career on the railroad, first with the Soo Line, DM & IR and retiring from the CN in 2012.

George loved fishing, barbecuing and watching his grandkids’ sporting events and he was an avid Brewers fan. He especially loved Sammy’s Pizza and making his sauerkraut and pickles every year. George also used to dress as Santa Claus, bringing joy to all the local elementary schools as well as his co-workers’ families. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #606, NARVRE (National Association of Retired Veterans and Railway Employees and past member of the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Fraternal Aid Society (Polish Club).

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister in law, Lynn Skandel and his beloved dog, Maggie.

George is survived by his wife, Kathryn; son, Corey (Joscy) Skandel of Superior; daughter, Jennifer (Andy) Droessler of Hayward; grandchildren, Dillan and Tyler Skandel, Bob and George (little George) Droessler; Also, by his brother, John Skandel of Barnes.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Funeral Service on Wednesday May 27, 2026, in First Evangelical Covenant Church, 3311 Hammond Avenue, Superior. Private family interment in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Memorials preferred to the First Evangelical Covenant Church, Superior.

The family would like to thank the Essentia St. Mary’s Medical Staff and the staff at Solvay Hospice House, Duluth, for their kind and passionate care of George.
