Gregory Allen Reid passed away Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 while vacationing with the love of his life, Jocelyn, in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Greg was born May 24th, 1954 to Jule and Mary Lou Reid of Pattison Park. In 1971, this strong, tall, blue-eyed boy met Jocelyn Rae Van Rossem of Allouez. They were married March 17, 1972 and this year celebrated 38 years of marriage. As Jocelyn put it, "It's hard to believe that two young seventeen-year-olds starting out with the odds against them could make it so long." And with God as the center of their marriage they did just that. Their love for each other was an inspiration to their family and countless others that they touched over the years.
At the start of their life together, Greg worked as a partsman for Plaza Dodge in Duluth. In 1973, they headed west with their new baby boy, Christopher, to Casper, Wyoming. For the next two years Greg managed Giansanti's Pizza, where he mastered the art of pizza making for which he is legendary; as an apprentice of the owner and his brother-in-law, John Giansanti. In June of 1975, homesick, the young family (with the addition of their second son, Aaron) moved permanently back to Superior.
Greg spent the next year working for Lakehead Constructors and then Lakehead Pipe Line Company. In 1976, he took a job with Four Star Construction where he served his carpentry apprenticeship under Jim Schmid. Nicholas, their third son, followed in 1980. In 2001, Greg began working for Forbes Family Trust, which he did until his retirement in 2009.
The most important decision of Greg's life was made in 1980 when he decided to die to himself and turn his life over to Jesus Christ. Over the last thirty years, Greg has spent his life serving his Savior. He is now in His presence worshipping Him face to face. Greg was a member of Hayward Wesleyan Church.
Greg and Jocelyn helped co-found Maranatha Academy in the early 1980s. Greg, a member of the Board of Directors of the school, also served as a trustee member for over twenty years. He passionately supported education from a Christian worldview.
He was a master carpenter and an avid sportsman and spent literally thousands of hours in the woods with his family hunting, teaching, loving, and laughing.
Greg is preceded in death by his father Jule Reid, and his grandson William Reid.
He will be continually remembered by his dear wife, Jocelyn; his mother, Mary Lou; his sisters Patty Helfenstein (John) and Mary (Doug) MacDonald; and his three sons: Chris Reid of Spicer, MN, Aaron Reid of New London, MN and Nick Reid of Washington, DC. His daughters-in-law: Syna, Jeannie, and Elizabeth admired and loved him dearly along with his 11 grandchildren: Kaela, Hannah, Gregory, Brett, Daniel, Susan, Jonathan, Lucy, MaryLou, Hope, and Jule who soaked up every minute of his affection. Each one of them looks forward to seeing him again one day in Heaven.
Visitation and a Celebration of Life service for Greg will be held at Darrow Road Wesleyan Church on Friday, April 2nd with Pastor Mark Wilson of Hayward Wesleyan Church officiating. The viewing begins at 10:00 a.m., with the service following at noon.
