Hannelore Suse Margot Winters died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, at age 82.

She was born Oct. 10, 1939, in Heidelberg, Germany, the first of three children born to Walter and Marie (Zimmermann) Morano. Born just after the German invasion of Poland, her early years were stained by war. She never liked to talk about her childhood although she frequently shared stories about spending time at her grandparents' farm in the German countryside.

At 20, Hannelore ventured to the United States where she fell in love with a Naval seaman, married and raised two daughters. Before she married, she worked at Goldmann's in Milwaukee and her last job before retirement was working as a physical therapist aide for Novacare. Many years were spent volunteering at her daughters' schools and devoted to her husband and children.

In 2006, she made her love for her adopted country known by becoming a naturalized citizen. It allowed her to return to her home country to visit with family she hadn't seen in decades. Only her mother and her niece, Carmen Wille, ever came to the United States to visit her.

She was a devoted wife to Walter Winters, who preceded her in death. Her sister, Helga, and brother, Ralf, also preceded her in death.

Hannelore was a dedicated mother to Shelley (Fred) Nelson and Angie (Greg Barcelona) Lopez, and a doting grandmother to Catherine, Karl and Matthew (Megan) Nelson, Stephanie (Dustin) Hansen and Nathaniel Barcelona, and "GG" (great-grandmother) to Lex and Sammy, all of whom survive her. She was also the beloved aunt and cousin of many in Germany and the United States.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19 ^th Street, Superior.

Her daughters thank the staffs at New Perspectives and Villa Marina Healthcare for their dedicated care for Hannelore.
