Harlan B. Rhodes, 82, of Superior, died Thursday, April 26, 2018, at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN.
He was born in Argonne, WI, on April 6, 1936, the son of Benjamin and Charlotte Rhodes.
Early in Harlan's career he was a community college social studies teacher in Kaukauna, WI. After moving to Superior, he had an 11 year career as a bartender at the Frankenstein bar and a 25 year combined tenure at Abex/ABC Rail corporation in maintenance and quality control inspection.
Harlan was a Private First Class in the United States Army, trained as a Sharpshooter (Pistol), and received a Good Conduct Medal.
He was an avid conversationalist about American and world history, politics with friends and family, and was often described as a "human encyclopedia."
Harlan cared deeply for all of his children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. He enjoyed the music of the 1950s, classic films, and sharing stories of his life with loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Charlotte and Paul Schi; father, Benjamin Rhodes; wife, June; siblings, Bertha Otten Correll, James Otten, Kathryn Pallas LaPaige, Charles Pallas, Harry Pallas, George Pallas, and Stanley Pallas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harlan is survived by his children, Patricia Rhodes, Margery Wittenberg, Maureen (Peter) Gee, Jeff Monaghan, Julianne Monaghan, Nancy Monaghan (Mike) Beery, Mike (Carol) Monaghan, and Mark (Jill) Monaghan; grandchildren, Sierra Wittenberg, Matthew Wittenberg, June Gee, Kane Larsen, Colin Larsen, Josh Beery, Jacob Beery, Kari Monaghan Treat, Ryan Monaghan, Riley Monaghan, and Nina Monaghan.
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 th Street with his friend, Bob Yost officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
