Hazel E. Schlais, 85, of Salem, Illinois, formerly of Superior, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 in Salem.

Hazel was born November 28, 1923 in Chicago, daughter of Gertrude (DeVries) and John Eastman.

During WWII she served in the U.S. Army.

On July 22, 1946, Hazel Eastman and Marshall Schlais were united in marriage.

Hazel was a retired school teacher and LPN.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; 2 sisters, Sharon Dray and Shirley Norkunas; and a brother, Raymond Eastman.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn (Lonnie) Bowling, Salem, Ill.; sons, Edward (Kelly) Schlais, South Range, Wis., David Schlais and Lowell Schlais, St. Paul, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Jack Eastman, Bakersfield, Cal., Daniel Eastman, Superior, and Robert Eastman, Terre Haute, Ind.; sisters, Beverly Ayers, Duluth, and Pat Anderson, Superior; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Apostolic Gospel Church, 3882 Haines Road, Duluth.

Burial will be in Veteran's Memorial Park, Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, with military rites accorded by the combined Thomas F. Stein VFW Post # 1091 and the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.

Pallbearers will be Brian Schlais, Kenneth Schlais, Steven Schlais,
Vincent Schlais, Timothy Levens and Cory Watson.

Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
