Helen Martha Niemi's Obituary
Helen Martha Niemi, 91 of Maple, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
Helen was born in Superior on December 15, 1923 the daughter of Mary (Lepisto) and Matt Tyykila. She was a lifelong Maple resident.
Her family was very important to her. She held on to some Finnish traditions which included making beautiful rag rugs found in many homes in the area, her Sunday sauna, and her love of a visit with family and friends. That always meant a strong cup or two of coffee with a variety of baked goods. She was in charge of the farm and loved her animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William J.; daughters, Jeanne Makela and Karen Niemi; a son, Jim Niemi; and brothers and sisters, Fred, Swen 'Vernon', Ervin, Ray and Ed Tyykila, Ailee Colby, Lillian Santikko, and Elna Johnson.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Kathie (Steve) Matushak of Solon Springs, Dorothy (Joe) Idziorek of Phoenix, AZ, and Julie (Don) Anderson of Maple; son-in-law, Jerry Makela of Salt Lake City, UT; and sisters, Bertha Mikkola, Violet Anderson and Mary Ann (Rodney) Lahti.
She is survived by her grandchildren Errol (Julie) and Erik Makela, Jay (Erin) and Chad (Kristi) Matushak, Michelle, Diana and Joe Idziorek, Jr.; John (Dawn) and Matthew (Kayla) Anderson, Sarah (Dustin) Quade, Vicki (Tim) Hattemer, Kristin (Reuben) Clemmer and Angie (Stuart) Taylor. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Thurs. Dec. 10th from 10:30 until the noon memorial service at Peace Lutheran Church in Poplar. Rev. John Knierim of Faith Lutheran Church in Maple will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Maple.
Honorary pallbearers will be her sons-in-law, Steve, Joe, Donald, and Jerry.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Robert Pierpont, the staff who took excellent care of Helen on 6E at St. Mary's Hospital and Jeff Cushman at Downs Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Maple.
Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave., is assisting the family with arrangements.
