Fagan
October 17, 1924 – October 16, 2016
Howard William Fagan, of Superior, WI, died on Sunday, October 16 th , 2016 just an hour shy of his 92 nd birthday. He was at home, surrounded by his family as stories were being shared of his life, bonfires on the beach, and sunsets on the Pacific Ocean. He was a loving father, husband, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Howard was born on October 17 th , 1924 in Superior, WI. He was very proud of his military service for his country, having fought in WWII with the Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1945. As Staff Sergeant, he was a Radio Operator and Gunner on a B25 airplane and flew 52 missions in the South Pacific.
In 1957, he married Audrey Schmidt, and together they had two children, Patti and Pamela. In their fifty years together, Howard and Audrey enjoyed dancing, attending country music concerts, and volunteering together at the church. They often piled kids and grandkids in the car, taking several camping trips to see the country.
Howard worked as chief chemist for Universal Atlas Cement and as a chemist for Cargill until his retirement in 1990. He was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church and his community. He was an avid outdoorsman, providing numerous venison and duck dinners for family and friends. He enjoyed golf, bowling, boating, sleek cars, and eventually, two feisty Chihuahuas named Jose and Tucker. Above all, he loved and valued family.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Doris Fagan, and his sisters, Margorie Cottenham and Francis O'Connell.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; his daughters, Patti Freeman and Pamela (Norman) Radtke; 5 grandchildren, Andrea, Janna, Rosie, Jack, and Norman; 5 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Greta, Ruth, Will, and Corinne; his sister, Joanne Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.
Howard will be honored and remembered by his friends and family for the values of nobility, dignity, self-control, and strength that he instilled in us all.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at Faith United Methodist Church at 3:00pm with a visitation one hour prior. Reverend Joel Certa-Werner will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
