Obituary

Howard C. Matson, 72, of Superior, died Thursday, January 23, 2020, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born in Superior on February 14, 1947, the son of Walter and Helia (Karky) Matson.

Howard proudly served with the U.S. Army. After serving in Korea he was honorably discharged and spent his life honoring his country.

In 2007, Howard retired from the BNSF Railroad after 33 years as an electrician.

On July 24, 1992, in Las Vegas, NV, Howard Matson and Kathy Wachsmuth were united in marriage.

Howard was a member of the former VFW Post #847 and the Eagles.

Some of his interests included golfing at the Pattison Park Golf Course, cheering for the Green Bay Packers, spending time with family and friends along with being Mr. Fixit; helping anyone that asked.  Howard had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time spoiling his dogs.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Maynard; sister, Marlene; and dog, Thunder.

Howard is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughter, Stacy (Lee) South of Esko, MN; sons, Gerald (Beth) Matson of Duluth, James Matson of Superior, Philip (Sara) Matson of Superior, and Travis (Rebecca) Wachsmuth of Superior; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold (Carole) Matson of White Bear Lake, MN and Ronald Matson of Duluth; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and dog, Trooper.

A visitation will be on Saturday, February 1, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. until the 12:00 Noon memorial service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 th Street, Superior.  Military honors by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 will follow the service at the funeral home. A luncheon will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Billings Park Civic Center.

Burial in Greenwood Cemetery will be held at a later date.
