Inez E. Petersen, 100, died Friday, September 4, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Superior.

She was born February 26, 1909 in Brimson, Minnesota, daughter of Anna (Halstad) and August Johnson.

Inez was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior-Douglas County Senior Center, and numerous other organizations.

Her work history included many years in food service and child care. For over 30 years, Inez served as a Foster Grandparent. Inez, "Grandma Inie" as she was known to the children she worked with, became a Foster Grandparent at the Kidde Land daycare in 1978. She logged over 28,000 hours working as a Foster Grandparent by serving as a tutor, mentor, friend, and role model for hundreds of pre-school children. In 2001, Inez was the recipient of the Catholic Charities Bureau Good Samaritan Award and was honored at the 2002 Catholic Charities USA National Conference in Chicago as one of 10 finalists for the 2002 National Volunteer of the Year.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, William Petersen in 1968; daughter, Myrna Bradford; and son, Robert Petersen.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane (Wilbur) Gustafson, Hudson, Wisconsin; granddaughter, Paula Petersen, Superior; daughter-in-law, Priscilla Petersen, Superior; 3 step-grandchildren, Tom, John and Gail; niece, Bonnie Nelson, Duluth; and many special friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior, with Reverend Gary Garnatz officiating.

A private graveside service was held at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Animal Rescue Federation.

Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
