Irene R. Kulig, 97, died peacefully of natural causes, on Thursday, December 16, 2021, in Superior.

Irene was born in Buckman, MN on April 10, 1924, the daughter of Mathias and Mary (Tetiva) Hesch.

She married Eugene 'Pete' Kulig on November 22, 1946, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage until his passing in 2005.

Irene was an active member at Holy Assumption Church where she was a part of Sacred Heart Circle for many years, serving as their treasurer for over 20 years. She volunteered for many of her church events, as well as at Faith United Methodist, and with the Superior School District. She enjoyed writing letters and loved baking for many, especially Apple Pie and Banana bread

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; son, Eugene M. 'Geno' Kulig; granddaughter, Mirra Smith Dahn; and 5 sisters.

Irene is survived by her son, Daniel (Mary) Kulig; daughters, Kathy (Jim Gagnon) Kulig, Nancy (Mark) Smith, and Barb (Steve) Carey; daughter-in-law, Linda (Richard) Berg; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Alkofer, and many nieces and nephews.

A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 ^th St.

A private family mass will be held at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
